# Listening and conversation

Published 2026-06-11

N-02 · Topic

Turn-taking, attention, and the repair work that keeps an ordinary conversation from collapsing.

Conversation looks effortless from inside and is astonishing from outside. Two people alternate in gaps measured in fractions of a second, each predicting where the other's sentence is going in order to start their own on time. They interrupt themselves, back up, rephrase, and check that they have been understood, and almost none of that repair work is noticed by either party afterwards.

The notes in this topic treat listening as an activity rather than an absence of speaking. They cover what attention actually costs, why the useful signal in a conversation is often the question that gets asked back, and how the same mechanics behave in a meeting where six people are waiting for a gap that never comes.
