# Speaking to a room

Published 2026-07-30

N-04 · Topic

Preparing, structuring and delivering a talk, especially when slides are not doing the work.

Speaking to a room is not a scaled-up conversation. The turn-taking that carries an ordinary exchange is suspended, the feedback arrives as posture and silence rather than words, and the speaker has to supply their own structure because nobody is going to ask the question that would have organised the next five minutes.

The notes here treat a talk as a piece of construction: what it is for, what shape holds an audience's attention, and what to do with the twenty minutes before you stand up. They assume no equipment and no particular setting.
